In Buenos Aires on Tuesday, university professor and Planning and Sustainability specialist Marcelo Alejandro Cortizi delivered a petition with over 67,000 signatures against the Glacier Law reform to a group of national deputies. The reform is set to be voted on Wednesday in a special session of the lower house. The petition, which the professional initiated on the Change.org platform, was received by national deputies Mariela Coletta, María Inés Zigarán, Carolina Basualdo, Maximiliano Ferraro, Pablo Farías, Sabrina Selva, and Andrea Freites. "The civic mobilization reflects the growing concern of Argentine society regarding the bill to amend the Glacier Protection Law (Law 26.639), enacted in 2010, which could reduce its scope and enable industrial activities in glacial and periglacial zones," states a communiqué accessed by the Argentine News Agency. "Glaciers represent strategic reserves of fresh water that rivers, Andean ecosystems, and the water supply for millions of people depend on. Their protection is a responsibility of the State and a commitment to future generations," the document concludes.
